South Florida faces 8-foot surf, coastal flooding risk during weekend king tides
King tides, intermittent rain and strong northeast winds are expected to raise the risk of coastal flooding and hazardous surf across South Florida this weekend. Forecasters expect waves of 5 to 8 feet and rain chances to increase into Monday.
South Florida could see coastal flooding and dangerous surf this weekend as unusually high king tides coincide with rain and strong northeast winds, according to a forecast issued Thursday, Oct. 22.
At high tide, water is expected to cover much of the region’s beaches, with saltwater flooding possible in some coastal areas. Winds strengthened by a high-pressure system are forecast to gust between 30 and 40 mph. Sustained winds could reach 21 mph Saturday and 26 mph Sunday.
The combination is expected to produce breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet, creating hazardous surf conditions.
Rain chances are forecast at 50% Saturday, 60% Sunday and 70% Monday. Periods of heavy rain are expected Sunday and Monday, adding to the weekend’s unsettled weather.
