Police say two men fled Doral mall after suspected fraudulent purchases
A theft investigation at Miami International Mall escalated into a chase Tuesday evening, ending with two men in custody. Police say they recovered 36 credit cards and three checks discarded from the men’s SUV; the items were not in either man’s name.
Two men were taken into custody Tuesday evening after a suspected credit-card fraud investigation at Miami International Mall in Doral led to a police chase, according to an arrest report.
Doral officers were called to Macy’s Men at about 6:05 p.m. for a reported theft in progress. They found Stephon Corbett and Gregory Edwards in a black 2024 Lincoln Navigator, the report says. Police allege Corbett drove off after officers ordered the men to stop.
Officers said Corbett continued along the mall’s perimeter road at high speed despite heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. During the pursuit, police saw Edwards throwing mail from the moving SUV. The report also alleges Corbett intentionally struck a marked police vehicle, damaging its push bar.
The chase ended when the SUV became trapped in traffic near La Carreta, according to police. Officers said both men initially refused to exit, and police broke the passenger-side front window before taking them into custody at about 6:12 p.m.
The investigation began after a Macy’s loss-prevention employee observed a man making purchases at Finish Line and in the store’s suits department. The employee contacted the retailer’s fraud hotline and was told the transactions were fraudulent, the report says. Police identified Edwards in surveillance footage as the person making the purchases.
After his arrest, Edwards initially denied making purchases at the mall, according to the report. Police say he later acknowledged using a victim’s credit card and told detectives that “his job is just to swipe.”
Investigators said they recovered 36 credit cards and three checks among items discarded from the SUV. None bore the names of Edwards or Corbett, the report says. Both men were taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The report does not state what charges they face.
