Fort Lauderdale dog found dead after being tethered to fence; Miramar woman arrested
A 31-year-old woman was arrested after deputies said a dog she had tied outside a Fort Lauderdale home was found dead. Investigators allege the dog was left without food, water or shelter and unable to lie down freely.
A 31-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after a dog was found dead while tethered to a fence outside a Fort Lauderdale home, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Raymanda Herring, whose permanent address is listed in Miramar, faces charges of confining an animal without sufficient food and causing an animal cruel death, pain and suffering, an arrest report says.
Deputies allege Herring went to a home in the 2900 block of Northwest Eighth Place on Sunday, where the dog was being kept. After seeing that the dog had urinated and defecated inside, she took it outside and attached its collar to a six-foot leash secured to a six-foot-high fence, the report states.
The dog could move only about a foot from the fence and could not lie down without the leash restraining its neck, deputies said. It was left without food, water or shelter, according to the report.
Herring told investigators she returned at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to check the mail and said the dog was still alive then, the report states. She left again without providing food or water and called the sheriff’s office, which advised her to contact Animal Control. Deputies said she did not contact the agency and the dog was found dead later Tuesday, still tied to the fence.
Herring was being held at the Broward County Main Jail Thursday morning and was expected to appear in bond court later that day. The allegations have not been tested in court.
