Northeast Miami-Dade man charged after children report food deprivation and confinement, deputies say
A Northeast Miami-Dade father was arrested Tuesday after his two children reported going days without food and being confined to their rooms, according to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report. Wendy Louis, 40, faces two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. Deputies went to his home for a welfare check after family members raised concerns about the children, the report said. The children told investigators they were sometimes denied food for days because Louis believed the government was putting “stuff” in it. They also said they were allowed to drink only water from the shower, could not leave their rooms for days and had to use a bucket as a toilet, according to the report. The children said they had not attended school since Louis withdrew them in August of last year and were not receiving homeschooling instruction, authorities said. The report did not identify their ages. Deputies described the children as extremely small and thin for their ages, with unkempt, matted hair. Investigators concluded Louis had failed to provide care and supervision needed to protect their physical and mental health, the report said. Louis declined to be interviewed, according to investigators. He was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remained jailed, with bond listed as “to be set” in online records. Jail records also showed an active bench warrant for Louis on battery/domestic violence and resisting an officer without violence charges. The neglect allegations are not findings of guilt.
