Man killed by Palm Beach deputy after pursuit tied to Lake Worth pizza-delivery robbery
A deputy fatally shot a 54-year-old man Tuesday after a vehicle chase ended in a crash near Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said. Bradshaw said the man did not have a gun, despite appearing to hold an object that looked like one during the confrontation.
A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a 54-year-old man Tuesday after a pursuit tied to the robbery of a pizza delivery worker in Lake Worth, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said. The chase ended in a crash near Boynton Beach.
The robbery happened Monday night. Bradshaw said the delivery worker provided a description of the suspect vehicle and its license plate. License-plate readers located the vehicle Tuesday, and officers attempted to stop it, the sheriff said.
The driver fled, leading to a pursuit on Interstate 95 involving the Florida Highway Patrol, according to Bradshaw. The vehicle’s tires eventually blew, and it crashed into a fence. The driver got out holding an object that officers believed resembled a gun, Bradshaw said.
Authorities tried less-lethal weapons several times, but they did not stop the man, the sheriff said. Bradshaw said the man shouted, “You’re gonna have to kill me,” repeatedly. He then raised his hands in what the sheriff described as a shooting position, and a deputy opened fire.
Bradshaw confirmed the man did not have a gun. His name has not been released. The sheriff said the man was a convicted felon with prior convictions or criminal history involving carjacking, robbery, kidnapping, assault, hit-and-run, trespassing and cocaine sales.
The account of the shooting and pursuit was provided by the sheriff. No further information about an investigation into the deputy’s use of force was included in the available details.
