Landscaping crew finds man dead behind northwest Miami-Dade church

A man was found dead Friday morning in a lot behind Peaceful Zion Missionary Baptist Church in northwest Miami-Dade after a nearby landscaping crew noticed a strong odor, authorities said.

Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputies responded shortly before 9 a.m. near Northwest 24th Avenue and Northwest 68th Street to a report of a sick or injured person. They found an adult man dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

A landscaping worker said the odor was noticeable from a distance. A crew member later approached the area and saw the man’s hands protruding from a bush.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives and crime scene investigators examined the lot Friday afternoon as deputies secured the area with crime scene tape. Authorities have classified the case as an unclassified death investigation; they have not said whether the death was a homicide or disclosed other details about the circumstances.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to determine the cause and manner of death. The man’s identity has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
