Deerfield Beach family removes drywall after floodwaters return to Eighth Avenue
Dorian Duff’s family says more than 5 inches of water entered their home during Saturday night’s rain, months after they finished repairs from an earlier flood. The family has begun removing drywall to reduce the risk of mold as questions persist about recurring flooding on their block.
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — A Deerfield Beach family is tearing out drywall after floodwater entered its home during Saturday night’s rainfall, months after the family moved back following extensive repairs from an earlier flood.
Dorian Duff said more than 5 inches of water seeped into the house on Eighth Avenue. Water sat outside for hours overnight before making its way through the walls and into the home, he said. The flooding affected the entire block.
A crew began removing about two feet of drywall throughout the house Sunday to help prevent mold. Duff and his family spent four months repairing damage from flooding last year and returned home in February. Duff said the family experienced similar flooding around Oct. 25 last year.
“I’m a Florida native, and I’ve seen heavy rain, but heavy rain doesn’t affect other parts of Florida like it affects Eighth Avenue,” Duff said.
Duff said the city added drainage and repaired roads in the area a few years ago, but he does not know why the block continues to flood. Some longtime residents have told him they had not seen flooding like this before; some suspect the road repairs may be connected, though no cause has been established.
