The callers may demand payment unexpectedly or use high-pressure tactics to push people into acting immediately. The office also cautioned that caller ID can be spoofed, meaning a call that appears to come from a familiar business may not be legitimate. Residents who receive a suspicious call should hang up rather than provide information. They should then find the business’s verified phone number independently and call back using that number, officials said. The sheriff’s office advised residents never to share personal or financial information over the phone in response to an unsolicited call. Legitimate businesses generally do not contact customers without warning to demand immediate payment, officials said.
