MADISON, Wis. — Overture Center hosted a free accessibility and inclusion event Monday, giving community members a chance to tour the downtown arts venue, meet guest-services staff and try tools intended to make performances more welcoming. The Accessible Season Announcement & Inclusive Celebration ran from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and was open to people with accessibility needs as well as their companions. Organizers said the event was designed both for first-time visitors and for returning patrons who want to better understand the venue’s services and spaces. Guests could test NaviLens, a navigation and information tool, along with audio-description services and assisted-listening equipment. Staff were available to answer questions and help visitors become more comfortable attending future performances. “We want to make sure that irrespective of how you experience the world, you can come in here and know that it’s a safe place and an environment that is accepting and friendly,” said Tom Klubertanz, Overture’s director of guest services. Alexis O’Connell, the center’s guest-services manager, said familiarity can be an important part of making cultural events accessible. “This event gives guests a chance to explore Overture Center and ask questions to become familiar with our spaces and services in a welcoming, supportive environment,” O’Connell said. “We want every guest—especially disabled guests and those new to our accessibility offerings—to feel comfortable and confident to return for future performances.” Overture lists several accommodations available at selected performances throughout the year, including American Sign Language interpretation, open and closed captions, enhanced and assisted listening, audio description and relaxed performances. NaviLens is also among the tools available to visitors. The center said it hopes to expand accessibility offerings over time.
