Sauk County judge finds George Paul competent to face trial in wife’s killing
A Sauk County court has found George Paul competent to stand trial on charges stemming from the killing of his wife, Susan Paul, and a later shooting at the Sauk Prairie Police Department, according to court records. Paul was arrested in May after a fatal shooting in Baraboo. Multiple people called Sauk County dispatch to report seeing a man pull a woman from a vehicle and shoot her. Susan Paul later died from her injuries. Police said the man then drove to the Sauk Prairie Police Department and fired several shots into its front door. George Paul was arrested a short time later. He faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide, pointing a firearm at a person, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, reckless use of a firearm, criminal damage to property and discharging a firearm within 100 yards of a building. The charges are allegations; the competency finding addresses whether he can proceed in court, not whether he is guilty. Paul is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 15.
