MONONA, Wis. — Monona police have released video showing an attempted pursuit of a motorcycle that reached speeds above 120 mph on the Beltline Sept. 9. An 18-year-old Oregon man has been charged with reckless driving in connection with the incident. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 23. Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney said the incident began at about 1:44 p.m., when he heard the motorcycle before seeing it. Chaney moved alongside the motorcycle with his emergency lights and siren activated so the rider would know police were attempting to stop him. In the video, Chaney said, the rider appears to look toward the patrol vehicle, while a passenger also looks back. The motorcycle then downshifted several times and accelerated, he said. Chaney eventually stopped the direct pursuit because of the motorcycle’s speed and the presence of other traffic on the Beltline. He said the department was able to end the chase knowing that Wisconsin State Patrol’s aerial enforcement resources could continue monitoring the motorcycle when available. The motorcycle was later located at a home in Portage. Columbia County sheriff’s deputies and Portage police responded with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol. The case highlights the safety tradeoffs law enforcement faces during high-speed pursuits, where continuing a chase can create risks for other drivers and nearby communities. Monona police said cooperation with state and local agencies allowed officers to continue working to identify and locate the driver without maintaining a ground pursuit at extreme speeds.
