A 25-year-old Milton man died Saturday after going underwater while snorkeling at Cox Hollow Beach in Governor Dodge State Park, according to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office.
The Iowa County Communications Center received multiple 911 calls about a possible drowning at about 5:45 p.m. Sept. 12. Early reports described the victim as a preteen child, information that was circulated on social media before responders could confirm what had happened.
Responders later determined that the victim was an adult man and identified him as Jordan Allen. Family members and bystanders began rescue efforts before emergency crews arrived, but Allen could not be revived. The Iowa County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene.
Two other people at the beach also needed medical attention while responders were assisting Allen. Dodgeville EMS took both to a local hospital, where they were treated and released.
The response included the Dodgeville Fire Department and EMS, the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources conservation warden, UW Health Med Flight and the Iowa County Coroner’s Office. Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home also assisted.
Iowa County Sheriff Michael Peterson thanked the relatives and bystanders who intervened, as well as the responding agencies, and expressed condolences to Allen’s family and loved ones.
