JANESVILLE, Wis. — A driver narrowly missed a crossing guard and two children on bicycles at a Janesville school crossing, prompting police to renew warnings about speeding, distracted driving and failing to stop for crossing guards. The Janesville Police Department shared video of the incident on Facebook. In the footage, a crossing guard steps into the roadway holding a stop sign as the children wait to cross. A vehicle then continues through the crosswalk, passing close to the guard and children. By Sunday, the video had been viewed 2.1 million times and received more than 10,000 reactions. Police said they have increased enforcement at school crossings throughout the city but continue to see motorists speeding, using their phones and ignoring crossing guards. The speed limit in Janesville school zones is 15 mph. “This video is shocking, but unfortunately, it’s not unique,” the department said. “Our dedicated crossing guards face these dangers far too often while simply trying to safely cross children on their way to and from school.” The department’s warning highlights the risks faced by crossing guards and students during daily walks and bike rides to and from school. Drivers approaching a school crossing should slow down, remain alert and stop when directed by a crossing guard.
