Cobb-born Nahldean Knebel, 103, keeps birthday flying tradition alive
Nahldean Knebel marked her 103rd birthday with another flight over southern Wisconsin, continuing a tradition that began when she was 101. Knebel, who was born in Cobb, spent much of her life traveling by road before taking her first airplane ride. She now lives at Sonrisas Assisted Living, where owner Kathy Hinzman helped arrange that first flight after learning Knebel had never been on a plane. The celebration has since become something Knebel looks forward to each year, said Krissa Hinzman, Sonrisas’ support manager and Kathy Hinzman’s daughter. She talks about the flight throughout the year, Krissa Hinzman said. For this year’s outing, flight instructor Lukas Kleinfeldt took Knebel over the Verona area and toward the state Capitol, pointing out downtown Madison and Camp Randall Stadium along the way. Richard Morey, owner and manager of the More Airplane Company at Middleton airport, said his team has been glad to help with the flights. The company has three generations working at the airport. Kathy Hinzman said arranging the trip is about creating happiness for Knebel and the people around her. After birthdays at 101, 102 and now 103, Knebel has another flight to anticipate in the year ahead.
