Louisville reports four homicides in September, lowest monthly total in nearly a decade
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four people were killed in Louisville in September, the city’s lowest homicide count for that month in nearly a decade, Mayor Craig Greenberg said Oct. 12. The total was down from 15 homicides in September 2025, a 73% decrease, according to the mayor. The city also recorded its lowest combined number of homicides and nonfatal shootings since 2013, Greenberg said. Through September, homicides in 2026 were down 23% from the same period last year, while nonfatal shootings had fallen 25%. Greenberg credited the declines to Safe Louisville, the city’s violence-prevention plan, which he described as emphasizing collaboration, neighborhood investment and addressing the underlying causes of violent crime. The figures show Louisville is on track for a fourth consecutive year of declining gun violence, he said. The mayor said public safety remains a priority but warned that the work is not finished. The reported declines are citywide figures; the announcement did not provide neighborhood-level totals or detail how much of the change could be attributed to specific programs. “Every person in every neighborhood deserves to be safe and feel safe,” Greenberg said, pledging to build on the progress in the coming months and years.
