BAYA festival draws 300 to celebrate girls’ confidence and youth businesses
Beautiful As You Are hosted its first International Day of the Girl festival at Louisville’s Parkland Boys and Girls Club, bringing together about 300 people. The Clarksville-based organization serves girls ages 6 to 18 through a community center and programs in 72 schools.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — About 300 people gathered Sunday at the Parkland Boys and Girls Club for the first International Day of the Girl Festival hosted by Beautiful As You Are, a regional organization that supports girls’ confidence and well-being. The Big Four Bridge was lit purple in recognition of the day.
The festival brought girls and families together with women-owned businesses and young entrepreneurs. It featured 40 vendors, including 16 youth-run businesses.
BAYA founder and executive director Tish Frederick said she wanted girls to leave feeling confident in who they are and able to face challenges without losing sight of themselves.
For Dedra Adams, the organization’s work has had a deeply personal impact. Adams said BAYA provided crucial support to her daughter, Essence, during a difficult period. “It actually saved my daughter’s life,” she said, encouraging other families to seek out the organization.
BAYA serves girls ages 6 to 18 through its community center in Clarksville, Indiana, and programs in 72 schools. Its work includes helping girls build self-esteem and navigate issues such as bullying.
The festival also showcased what that support can make possible. Ramyah Carnell said she began making jewelry at a BAYA summer camp and later started her own business, Jewel & Junk. She credited the organization with helping her understand herself and urged other girls to stay focused on who they want to become.
BAYA Director of Fund Development Averi Beck said the gathering also offered a chance for young people and adults to learn from one another across generations.
The organization’s next event, “Empowerment on the River,” is planned for Nov. 7 at Waterfront Park.
