Indiana plans to clear two Jeffersonville encampments after 72-hour notice

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — People staying at two small homeless encampments near Interstate 65 and Eastern Boulevard have until Monday to leave before Indiana Department of Transportation crews clear the state-owned sites, authorities said Friday, Oct. 23.

Indiana State Police troopers visited the wooded camps Friday morning and notified residents that crews would arrive in three days. The state says maintenance and inspection work is needed in the area. Officials began notifying camp residents in August, and some people had already left, according to State Police Sgt. Carey Huls.

Troopers were not making arrests during Friday’s visit. They brought backpacks containing clothing and food donated by Graceland Baptist Church.

Huls said authorities recognize that the situation is difficult for the people living at the encampments. The available information did not specify how many residents remained or what shelter or other assistance would be available to them after the sites are cleared.
