UNLV names longtime campus leader Chris Heavey its 12th permanent president
The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents appointed Chris Heavey to lead UNLV after he served as interim president since April 2025. The university reported record enrollment and its highest-ever graduation rate during his interim tenure.
The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents has appointed Chris Heavey as the 12th permanent president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, formalizing the leadership role he has held on an interim basis since April 2025.
The board approved a new employment agreement for Heavey on Oct. 16. He has worked at UNLV for more than three decades, including more than five years as executive vice president and provost before becoming interim president.
During his interim tenure, UNLV reached record enrollment of nearly 34,000 students and graduated about 7,000 students annually, according to the university system. The school also recorded its highest graduation rate and a retention rate near its record level.
“UNLV is central to Nevada’s future,” NSHE Chancellor Matt McNair said, citing the university’s role in preparing students for high-demand careers, conducting research and building partnerships across Southern Nevada. He said Heavey brings experience and a collaborative approach to the presidency.
Heavey previously held several academic and administrative posts at UNLV, including senior vice provost, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and vice provost for undergraduate education. He is a tenured psychology professor and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
In a statement, Heavey said he was grateful for the opportunity to continue leading UNLV and described public higher education as vital to Nevada. He said the university had momentum but still had work ahead.
UNLV’s enrollment and graduation figures underscore the scale of the institution’s role in Southern Nevada, where it serves tens of thousands of students and contributes research and workforce training. The appointment gives the university permanent leadership after more than a year under an interim president.
