Lights’ final Cashman Field game marks end of an era for Las Vegas fans

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Lights’ final home game at Cashman Field brought generations of fans together Oct. 17 to say goodbye to a downtown stadium that has hosted sports and entertainment for more than four decades.

For season-ticket holder Adam, the farewell was bittersweet: He wanted to support the Lights and celebrate the memories made at the stadium, while hoping the team finds another home in the Las Vegas Valley.

Adam, who tailgates at every Lights home game with a group of friends, said he had met some of his closest friends there. He urged supporters to follow the team wherever it plays next.

Longtime visitors recalled more than baseball and soccer. Armando, who said he has attended events at Cashman since the 1980s, came wearing a Las Vegas Stars jersey. He said he would miss the people, food and beer. Kevin remembered concerts by Metallica, the Monkees and the Doobie Brothers, along with fireworks shows.

For Carla and Mike, Cashman had been a family outing since the 1980s. They arrived nearly two hours before the gates opened and reflected on the friends and relatives they had brought to the stadium over the years. They called it part of Las Vegas history and said they were saddened to see it go.

The farewell also welcomed first-time visitors. Concha attended with her family after her daughter’s Legacy Traditional North Valley School choir was invited to sing before the game. She said the family felt honored to be part of the occasion.

City officials said a demolition date has not been set because the sale has not been finalized; they expect that process to extend until the end of the year. No demolition schedule was announced.

As Cashman’s sports history comes to a close, Lights supporters said they intend to keep backing the team when its next home is announced.
