Las Vegas traffic deaths fall by 32, but police warn against speeding and phone use

Las Vegas has recorded 97 traffic fatalities so far this year, 32 fewer than at the same point last year, according to Capt. Jarvis Dudley of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Bureau. He said speeding and distracted driving remain serious dangers as the holiday season approaches.

Dudley spoke during Teen Driver Safety Week, emphasizing that safe driving is a concern for people of every age, not only teenagers. He urged parents to discuss good driving habits with teens, noting that behaviors learned early can continue into adulthood.

He also recommended Driver’s Edge, a program that gives young drivers practical instruction at a track, including practice in wet conditions and lessons on safe driving and traffic rules.

Dudley said drivers should put their phones away and avoid speeding. The year-over-year decline in fatalities is encouraging, but police are warning that continued attention to safe driving is important for everyone sharing Las Vegas roads.
