Arts District club can reopen under added security rules after fatal stabbing
Las Vegas City Council approved a conditional, temporary reopening for Cork and Thorn, which closed after a man was fatally stabbed in a nearby city parking lot. The club must meet new security requirements, with a formal public hearing set for Nov. 4.
Cork and Thorn, an Arts District nightclub shuttered after a fatal stabbing in a nearby parking lot, can temporarily reopen under conditions approved Wednesday by the Las Vegas City Council.
The reopening will take effect after the club meets with Metro police. The conditions include reduced operating hours, an updated security plan, a weapons ban and payment for at least four security staff members or off-duty Metro officers. The city can shut the club again if it violates the requirements.
The closure followed a September stabbing in a city-run lot across the street from the club, near West Imperial Avenue and Commerce Street. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said officers responding shortly before 3 a.m. found a man with a stab wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Dozens of Cork and Thorn supporters, including employees, performers and patrons, attended the council meeting to urge officials to let the venue reopen. The business has hosted local and visiting artists, and its closure also affected performers, staff and food trucks that relied on events there, owner Randi Garrett said.
Las Vegas poet William Taylor, who has organized showcases at the venue with his wife since 2016, said the club gave emerging artists a place to perform. Patron Corey Lofton, who traveled from Georgia, described it as welcoming and unlike other downtown bars he had visited.
Garrett said the club already screens for weapons and has security in place, but she is willing to take additional steps. She said she wants people from across the valley to feel safe in the Arts District and that the club is working with the city.
A formal public hearing on the matter is scheduled for Nov. 4 in the Arts District.
