Las Vegas, Clark County keep northwest valley fire and ambulance pact in place

Clark County commissioners approved an extension of the emergency-response agreement through February, giving the city and county more time to negotiate over costs. The pact governs how fire and ambulance crews are dispatched to 911 calls in the growing northwest valley.

An agreement coordinating fire and ambulance responses in northwest Las Vegas will remain in effect through February while city and county officials continue negotiations over who pays for the service.

The Clark County Commission approved the extension Tuesday, Oct. 20. Las Vegas city officials had approved it earlier in October. The agreement had been scheduled to expire in December.

The pact sets out how fire and ambulance crews are dispatched to 911 calls in the northwest valley, where the arrangement affects tens of thousands of residents. Its extension maintains the current framework while officials work toward a longer-term agreement.

The dispute centers on the cost of emergency response. City officials say expenses are rising as the northwest valley grows. County officials counter that Las Vegas already funds other regional services, including police, elections and 911 dispatch.

Residents have raised concerns about the area’s future emergency services. County officials say negotiations are continuing; no final resolution to the cost dispute was announced.
