Harry Reid airport finishes three-year baggage system overhaul

Harry Reid International Airport has completed a three-year, $71 million project to modernize its baggage handling systems in both terminals, the Clark County Department of Aviation announced Oct. 23.

The work in Terminal 1 included upgrades to eight baggage carousels, replacement of eight others, new conveyors and carousel columns fitted with LED screens. In Terminal 3, crews updated the computer hardware and software that operate the baggage system.

The department said the project was completed on schedule and within budget, and was funded largely through federal grants. In February 2023, U.S. Sens. Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto, both Nevada Democrats, announced $31 million for the airport from the bipartisan infrastructure law’s Airport Terminal Program to modernize baggage systems in Terminals 1 and 3.

“Modernizing our airport means investing in the infrastructure and technology that keep our operations running reliably and efficiently,” James Chrisley, the county’s director of aviation, said in a statement.

The overhaul updates equipment used to move checked luggage through the airport, which serves the Las Vegas region. The department did not provide a breakdown of the project’s funding beyond saying federal grants covered most of the cost.
