Friends rebuild North Las Vegas memorial after fatal crash tribute is damaged

Friends and family have rebuilt a roadside memorial for Michael Kimbrough after vandals took its cross and wrecked a floral arch. The tribute stands on West Ann Road near Rainbow Boulevard, close to where Kimbrough lived in North Las Vegas.

It is the second memorial supporters have assembled since Kimbrough, a motorcyclist, was killed in a crash on Sept. 19. The homeowners association gave them permission to use the space for a year, friends said, in part to honor him and remind drivers to slow down.

North Las Vegas police said officers were called at about 3:35 a.m. to West Ann Road and Whitestone Drive for a collision involving a motorcycle and an SUV. Kimbrough was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators’ preliminary account indicates Kimbrough was riding a 2007 Harley-Davidson west on Ann Road as a 2019 Honda CR-V traveled south on Whitestone Drive and attempted a left turn onto eastbound Ann Road. The motorcycle struck the SUV’s left side, police said. The SUV driver left before officers and emergency crews arrived. Police are investigating, and no arrest was reported.

Kimbrough’s friend John Orndoff said the two rode motorcycles together, worked on vehicles and went to car shows. Kimbrough was also godfather to Orndoff’s child.

“He was an amazing person; this was the least we could do for his family,” said Kelzia Kirkland, who helped with the first memorial. “We wanted to show his family he was loved.”

After learning the cross had been stolen and the arch destroyed, friends rebuilt the tribute and appealed for the items to be returned. Kirkland said they were not asking whoever took them to meet or speak with the family, only to put them back.

Friends say the memorial also reflects the unresolved investigation: Kimbrough’s family has offered a reward for information that could help police identify the driver. Orndoff urged the person responsible to come forward, saying, “We all do make mistakes.”
