County weighs costly overhaul of vacant Liberace Avenue complex
Clark County estimates repairs to New Orleans Square would exceed $20 million, with a more extensive renovation topping $25 million. The county has not settled on a plan, while nearby residents say demolition could leave the area with a vacant lot for years.
Clark County’s estimated cost to renovate New Orleans Square exceeds $20 million, and a more extensive upgrade could push the bill above $25 million, according to a county assessment released Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026.
The county bought the long-vacant commercial property in 2024 for $6.5 million. The four buildings on Liberace Avenue date to 1975 and do not meet current building codes, which has kept the county from leasing available space.
The assessment identified needed work on the roof, electrical system, sewer lines, stairways and drainage. County documents reviewed so far do not establish a final renovation plan.
At a City Council meeting, nearby residents urged officials to rehabilitate the complex rather than demolish it. One resident said renovations could bring more people to the property and support activity across the commercial center. Another warned demolition could leave the neighborhood with an empty lot for decades, doing little to revive nearby businesses.
The county’s decision will determine whether the aging complex is repaired at a substantial public cost or cleared, with residents raising concerns about what might happen to the site if it is torn down.
