Cate Sgroi to lead Nevada’s high school activities association starting Monday

Cate Sgroi will become executive director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association on Monday, Oct. 19, the association announced Friday, Oct. 16. She will be the NIAA’s seventh full-time executive director.

Sgroi has served as an NIAA assistant director since July 2024. She was selected after the association’s Board of Control first chose Todd Cutler, superintendent of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, for the post. The association and Cutler were unable to agree on contract terms.

“I look forward to building on the strong foundation of the NIAA, bringing all stakeholders together around a shared vision, and finding meaningful ways to enhance the experience of Nevada’s student-athletes,” Sgroi said in a statement.

Before joining the NIAA, Sgroi spent two years as a director in the Clark County School District athletics office. Her education career began at Sierra Vista High School, where she taught biology and coached track and girls’ volleyball. She became the school’s athletic director in 2016, serving four years, then worked as an assistant principal for nearly two years before moving to the district athletics office.
