88-year-old woman dies weeks after being struck in south Las Vegas crosswalk
The woman was hit by a turning SUV near Pebble Road and Maryland Parkway on Aug. 14 and later suffered additional injuries in a fall during recovery. Police said her death will not be included in federal traffic-fatality totals because it occurred more than 30 days after the crash.
An 88-year-old woman died Sept. 22, more than five weeks after a vehicle struck her in a marked crosswalk near Pebble Road and Maryland Parkway in south Las Vegas, police said.
The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. Aug. 14. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said a westbound 2011 Toyota Highlander was turning left onto Maryland Parkway on a flashing yellow arrow when it hit the woman as she crossed.
Paramedics took her to the St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s Sienna campus with injuries initially believed to be minor. Further evaluation found that she needed continued medical care, police said. She sustained additional injuries in a fall while recovering on Sept. 16 and died six days later.
The crash initially did not meet the criteria for a response from the department’s Collision Investigation Section. Investigators were notified of the woman’s death on Oct. 22, according to police.
Under federal guidelines cited by the department, a death is counted as a traffic fatality only if it occurs within 30 days of a crash. Because the woman died beyond that period, her death will not be included in federal traffic-fatality statistics. The crash remains under investigation.
