Twelve hurt in shooting near FAMU; Tallahassee police arrest 15-year-old
A 15-year-old has been arrested after gunfire near Bragg Memorial Stadium injured 12 people during Florida A&M’s homecoming weekend. Police say the shooting followed a fight between people who knew one another, and more arrests may follow.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A 15-year-old boy was arrested Monday in connection with a shooting that injured 12 people near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium during homecoming weekend, Tallahassee police said.
Police identified the teen as Anthony Rivers III. He faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent, according to a department social media post. The charges are allegations; the post did not explain why the number of attempted-murder counts was lower than the number of people injured.
The shooting happened at about 8 p.m. Saturday near Perry and Manatee streets. Six of the injured people were children, police said. One person hurt an ankle while fleeing the gunfire. Officers provided aid before the scene was fully secured, according to police.
Investigators’ preliminary findings indicate the gunfire followed a physical fight among people who knew one another. Police said the victims do not appear to have been the intended targets.
“What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families,” Police Chief Lawrence Revell said. He called the arrest a significant step but said investigators’ work continues.
Police said they received numerous public tips and digital evidence after the shooting. Detectives are reviewing the material and pursuing leads, and additional arrests are possible.
