Tallahassee police seek witnesses after homecoming-area shooting wounds 12

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Police are asking witnesses to share tips, photos and video as they investigate a shooting that injured 12 people near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium during homecoming weekend.

The shooting happened Saturday night on Perry Street, behind the stadium, as crowds left a homecoming celebration. The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff had defeated FAMU 31-28 earlier that day. Police have not said whether the shooting was connected to the game.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said six victims were minors, including an 11-year-old. Eleven people were shot, and one person was injured while running from the scene. At least three victims had serious injuries, police said.

By Sunday morning, five people had been released from the hospital and six remained hospitalized. One of those still hospitalized was in critical condition. Police reported no deaths; they did not provide an update on the remaining victim’s condition.

Investigators said a fight broke out before the shooting. The department said detectives had reviewed digital evidence and canvassed the area, while its Violent Crimes Unit led the investigation. No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning.

Police have set up a dedicated tip line and online portal for submissions of photos and video. “No detail is too small, and no piece of information should go unreported,” Revell said, asking anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward.

The university said the shooting occurred near campus and that the campus remained safe. Homecoming events had taken place throughout the week and were scheduled to conclude Sunday. FAMU President Marva Johnson said the university had contacted injured members of its community to offer support. Mayor John Dailey called the shooting a “truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy.”
