Suspicious package prompts police closure of four St. Marys streets

ST. MARYS, Ga. — Police closed part of historic downtown St. Marys on Thursday, Oct. 22, while emergency personnel investigated a suspicious package.

A police alert posted around 4 p.m. urged people to stay away from the area, particularly Ready, Conyers, St. Marys and Bartlett streets. Police provided no details about the package or how long the closure would last.

“For your safety and to allow emergency personnel to work without interference, please stay clear of the area until further notice,” the department said in its Facebook post.

The closure affected a downtown district with shops, restaurants and historic sites, as well as a dock used by a ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore. Police asked people to follow the safety request while the investigation continued.
