A 65-year-old man died Tuesday after he was found in the water near an overturned canoe at Harborview Boat Ramp in Jacksonville, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office incident report.

A witness told officers that someone in a car alerted him to a person in distress near the ramp. The witness attempted to help, but the man went underwater.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department crews initially could not recover him because of the water’s depth. The Sheriff’s Office dive unit later recovered the body. The incident report identified the man as Nelson but did not provide his full name.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission took over the investigation. Authorities have not released further details about what caused the canoe to capsize.
