Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office formally shifts headquarters to Riverside

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office formally marked its move to Riverside on Tuesday, Oct. 20, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Florida Blue tower, 532 Riverside Ave., where the agency is establishing its headquarters.
Sheriff T.K. Waters, Mayor Donna Deegan and City Council President Nick Howland took part in the ceremony. Former sheriffs James McMillan, Nat Glover and John Rutherford also attended. A tour included the new Public Services Building at 450 Magnolia St., as well as the agency’s Real Time Crime Center and Communications Center.
The move from the Police Memorial Building at 501 E. Bay St. began in September, after about three years of planning and consideration. The Sheriff’s Office has leased three floors in the Florida Blue building.
The agency’s headquarters had been downtown since 1977. The Police Memorial Building is considered outdated, and a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said nothing would remain there once the transition is complete.
The city has not announced a plan for the building’s future. Redevelopment has been discussed, while the possible relocation of the adjoining jail has also been a subject of debate for years.
