Hintz’s late equalizer and overtime breakaway lift Stars past Winnipeg
Roope Hintz scored twice, including the winner 3:47 into overtime, as Dallas rallied for a 3-2 home victory over the Jets on Thursday. The Stars have emerged as one of the Central Division’s top three teams through 10 games.
DALLAS — Roope Hintz scored with two minutes left in regulation to force overtime, then finished a breakaway 3:47 into the extra period to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night at American Airlines Center.
Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead in the second period on goals by Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor, scored less than two minutes apart. Vilardi poked at a loose puck near Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger, and Connor followed with a one-timer from the right circle after a turnover.
Dallas tied the game when Mikko Rantanen fed Hintz from behind the net late in regulation. Rantanen had two assists, as did Jason Robertson.
Hintz had come close to scoring earlier. At the end of the second period, Stuart Skinner reached back with his glove to stop a puck that Hintz had redirected near the side of the net, preventing it from crossing the goal line. Skinner made 35 saves for Winnipeg.
Wyatt Johnston scored his first goal of the season for Dallas after scoring 45 times last season. Oettinger stopped 17 shots and has allowed two goals or fewer in seven of his eight games this season.
Robertson recorded his 500th and 501st career points in his 466th game, reaching the milestone faster than all but three players in Stars franchise history: Neal Broten, Bobby Smith and Dino Ciccarelli.
The victory kept Dallas among the Central Division’s top three teams 10 games into the season. The Stars are scheduled to host the New York Rangers on Sunday, the third game of a season-high six-game homestand. Winnipeg, which has lost four straight one-goal games, is set to host Montreal in Sunday’s Heritage Classic outdoor game.
