Van Zandt deputy Adam Sherifi killed while serving warrant near Canton
Deputy Adam Sherifi was fatally shot and a Canton police officer was wounded when a suspect opened fire during a warrant service south of Canton Tuesday night. The suspect was found dead inside the home; officials have not publicly identified the suspect or injured officer.
A Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy was killed and a Canton police officer was wounded Tuesday night when a suspect opened fire on officers serving a warrant at a home south of Canton, authorities said.
Deputy Adam Sherifi died after the shooting, which happened around 10:30 p.m. in the 4300 block of State Highway 198. The Canton officer was shot in the arm and flown to a Plano hospital for surgery. The officer was reported to be in stable condition.
Van Zandt County deputies were helping Canton police serve the warrant. Officials said the suspect had outstanding felony warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer. The suspect fired from inside the residence, and officers later found the suspect dead there from a gunshot wound.
Authorities had not released the suspect’s identity or the injured officer’s name. Canton’s mayor said the officer had joined the department two months earlier after working for the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office.
Sherifi’s widow described him as a brave, strong and kind husband and father in a social media post. The couple had three young children, including a baby born last month. Family member Nancy White said Sherifi left his family to serve the community despite having a six-week-old at home.
Friends, relatives, neighbors and local leaders gathered outside the Van Zandt County courthouse Wednesday to pray for Sherifi’s family and for the family of three children who died in a house fire in the county overnight. County Judge Joshua Winters told those gathered, “It is not tragedy that binds us together, it’s faith.”
The city of Canton and its police department also issued statements expressing support for the injured officer and Sherifi’s family. A barbecue fundraiser was planned for Saturday to support the deputy’s family.
