SMU theater graduates Julian Harris and Madison Duren killed in White Rock Lake-area crash
Dallas theater artists Julian Harris and Madison “Madi” Duren were killed in a three-vehicle crash near White Rock Lake on Oct. 6, leaving colleagues and mentors mourning two young performers who had already become part of North Texas’ arts community. The crash happened on Garland Road near the Dallas Arboretum. Harris, 23, was driving a Toyota Prius and died at the scene, according to Dallas police. Duren, 22, died later at a hospital. Investigators believe the Prius pulled onto Garland Road and was struck broadside, but police have not said whether speed contributed. A Hyundai Elantra carrying a woman and two children, ages 1 and 3, was also involved. The family members were injured and survived. Police said a third vehicle left the scene; as of Oct. 12, no arrests had been announced and investigators had not provided further details about that vehicle. Harris and Duren were recent Southern Methodist University graduates who built their careers together in Dallas. Duren earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater; Harris earned the same degree with honors. Both were active in local theater and studied clowning as well as acting. Harris performed in “The Absentee” at Kitchen Dog Theater just two days before the crash. Tina Parker, the company’s co-artistic director, remembered the couple’s closeness and said they were “like the Romeo and Juliet of our building.” Mac Welch of Teatro Dallas said their loss extends beyond the performances they might have given. The pair, he said, were already inspiring younger artists and could have become “community shapers.” The crash has left the region’s theater community confronting the sudden loss of colleagues whose promise was already visible onstage and in the relationships they built. Dallas police say the investigation is ongoing.
