Reynoldsburg caregiver gets life sentence with parole possible after 15 years
Tammra Straughter, 54, was sentenced Wednesday after a jury convicted her of murder and child endangerment in the 2023 death of a 5-month-old boy in her care. Her defense has 30 days to file an appeal.
A judge sentenced Tammra Straughter to life in prison Wednesday for the death of a 5-month-old boy who was in her care at her Reynoldsburg home daycare. She could be considered for parole after serving 15 years.
Straughter, 54, was convicted in August of murder and endangering children. The infant died in October 2023. An indictment alleged Straughter disciplined the child in a way that caused serious physical harm and was excessive under the circumstances.
The case also involved surveillance footage showing Straughter abusing a cat on the day the boy died. Lawyers debated whether the footage was relevant to the charges; there was no video evidence showing abuse of the infant.
Judge Bill Sperlazza imposed the sentence about six weeks after the guilty verdict. Straughter’s defense has 30 days to file an appeal.
