Meigs County woman sues over alleged wrong-leg amputation at Marietta hospital
Sharon Jacks, 74, alleges that Selby General Hospital staff amputated her left leg in 2025 even though her right leg was the planned surgical site. The hospital’s operator called the incident avoidable and said it has taken steps to prevent a recurrence.
A 74-year-old Meigs County woman has sued Selby General Hospital in Marietta, alleging that medical staff amputated the wrong leg during a surgery in September 2025.
Sharon Jacks filed the lawsuit in Washington County Common Pleas Court in September, according to the complaint. She alleges she was scheduled to have her right leg amputated on Sept. 19, 2025, to treat a chronic venous stasis ulcer, a wound linked to circulation problems. Instead, the complaint says, surgeons removed her left leg. Jacks’ right leg was amputated about four months later, leaving her a double amputee.
The 32-page complaint names nine defendants, including the hospital and members of the surgical team, and accuses them of medical negligence, battery and reckless conduct. It says the schedule and other hospital records identified the right leg as the surgical site, and alleges staff had several opportunities to prevent the error. The filing characterizes the event as a “never event,” a term used in health care for serious errors considered largely preventable.
Jacks is seeking damages for alleged physical injury, permanent disability, pain and suffering, emotional distress, medical costs and other losses. She has requested a jury trial; the amount of damages would be determined by the jury.
Memorial Health System, which operates Selby General, described the amputation as an “avoidable event” in a statement reported by The Columbus Dispatch. The health system said required operating-room procedures were not followed, that the staff involved no longer work at the hospital, and that it has implemented corrective measures. It said it was saddened by what happened and that its team continues to keep Jacks and her family in its prayers.
