North Columbus hotel shooting leaves 60-year-old woman dead; son charged
A 38-year-old man has been charged with murder after a gun discharged at a North Columbus hotel, killing his mother and injuring him, according to police and court records. Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, to a reported shooting at the Double Ten Hotel in the 6100 block of Zumstein Drive. They found Marlena Hicks, 60, and her son, William David Smith II, with gunshot wounds, police said. Hicks died at a hospital shortly after 2:30 a.m. Smith survived and was charged with murder before being released from the hospital, police said. According to court records, Smith was handling a firearm in what police described as an unsafe manner when it fired. The single bullet struck Smith and then Hicks, who was in a bathroom in a neighboring room, the records say. A murder warrant was issued Sunday. Smith was arraigned Tuesday and received a $500,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 15. The charge is an allegation, and the case will proceed through the court system.
