Columbus Zoo’s newest langur joins troop of 17 after July birth
The female silvered leaf langur, born July 30, has been named Dolly in honor of Dolly Parton. Her birth was part of a cooperative zoo breeding program and is the Columbus Zoo’s first langur birth since 2019.
POWELL, Ohio — A female silvered leaf langur born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in July has been named Dolly, a nod to singer and songwriter Dolly Parton.
The zoo said the two-month-old’s name was chosen with help from Friends of the Columbus Zoo and the animal care team. Her “bright personality” made Dolly a fitting choice, the zoo said in a social media post.
Dolly was born July 30 to first-time parents Coral and Kuati. The birth followed a breeding recommendation made through a cooperative program in which zoos work together to support the species’ population.
The zoo also drew a connection to Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors”: langurs are born with bright orange fur that gradually turns silver as they grow.
Silvered leaf langurs are active mainly during daylight hours. Females in a group help care for young, a behavior known as allo-parenting, and the group sleeps together in one tree at night.
Dolly is the first silvered leaf langur born at the Columbus Zoo since 2019. Her arrival brings the zoo’s langur troop to 17. Visitors can see the animals in the Asia Quest region.
