Two men have been sentenced in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Darnell Brown-Jones in Columbus’ Mount Vernon neighborhood in 2024. Giavon Hayes, 21, received a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to felonious assault and having a weapon under disability. Mi’Shawn Thomas, 20, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to an indefinite term of 10 to 15 years, according to court records. The pleas were entered Thursday, Sept. 24. Columbus police were called to the 900 block of Eaton Grove at about 10:30 p.m. after Brown-Jones was found with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Hayes and Thomas were arrested in November 2024, about a week after the shooting. The men had initially faced aggravated murder, two murder counts and two aggravated robbery counts. Thomas also faced felonious assault and a weapons charge. Those charges were dropped as part of the guilty pleas, court records show.
