A 51-year-old man is believed to have killed four members of his family and then died by suicide inside a Mundelein home Sunday, police said in an update Tuesday.
Investigators believe Bryan Schmidt shot his parents, his partner and his son at the home in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to authorities. Police said the four victims were found close to one another.
The victims were identified as James Schmidt, 80; Rebecca Schmidt, 77; Nicole Heiser, 37; and Maclaine Schmidt, 22. Bryan Schmidt’s body was also found inside the residence.
Police were called at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday after a concerned family member requested a welfare check. Detectives said multiple notes were left by Bryan Schmidt inside the house and in his vehicle. Authorities have not released details about the notes or a possible motive.
