Lawsuit alleges assault at University of Chicago Alpha Delta Phi party

A 19-year-old woman says she was sexually assaulted at an Alpha Delta Phi party in February, according to a lawsuit filed in Cook County. The case comes amid a separate police investigation into an assault report at another UChicago fraternity.

Lawsuit alleges assault at University of Chicago Alpha Delta Phi party

A 19-year-old woman has sued the University of Chicago’s Alpha Delta Phi fraternity chapter, alleging that a member sexually assaulted her during a party on Feb. 7 at the fraternity house in Hyde Park.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Cook County court, identifies the woman as Jane Doe. It alleges that a fraternity member gave her a shot of alcohol and that she was later found unconscious in a room. A friend helped her leave the house, the suit says, and she struggled to speak and walk. The next morning, she found bloodstains in her underwear and reported the alleged assault to Chicago police, according to the filing.

The police investigation remains open, the lawsuit says. Doe accuses the fraternity and its University of Chicago chapter of failing to address earlier sexual-assault allegations involving members and of not putting meaningful safeguards in place. Those allegations have not been adjudicated in court.

The fraternity house is at 5747 S. University Ave. Neither the University of Chicago nor Alpha Delta Phi responded to requests for comment.

The case follows a separate sexual-assault report at the university’s Alpha Epsilon Pi house that prompted a Chicago Police Department investigation earlier this month. The two allegations concern different fraternities and separate incidents.
