Police investigate reported gunfire near downtown Chicago federal offices
Chicago police and federal authorities responded early Tuesday to a report of shots fired at the Kluczynski Federal Building. Officials had not confirmed the report, though investigators marked what appeared to be shell casings near the scene.
Police and federal authorities were at the Kluczynski Federal Building in downtown Chicago early Tuesday, Oct. 20, after dispatch audio reported a man firing shots at the building.
The call was reported at about 4:45 a.m. By 6:30 a.m., a large police presence was visible on Clark Street near Jackson Boulevard, along with personnel from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Chicago police had not confirmed that shots were fired.
Evidence markers for shell casings were visible at the scene. Dispatch audio indicated there were about 15 casings, but that number and the circumstances of the reported gunfire had not been independently confirmed. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was taken into custody.
The Kluczynski Federal Building, which houses offices for several federal agencies, sits on Federal Plaza across Dearborn Street from the Dirksen Federal Courthouse. Authorities had not released information about injuries or any disruption to building operations.
