Midway closes Runway 22L after jet-blast damage to safety system

A runway at Chicago’s Midway International Airport has been closed to arriving and departing flights while crews repair a damaged safety system, the Chicago Department of Aviation said Monday, Oct. 19, 2026.

Runway 22L’s Engineered Materials Arresting System, or EMAS, was damaged by recent aircraft activity, including jet blast, the department said. The closure will remain in place during repairs, which are expected to be completed by mid-November.

The Chicago Department of Aviation warned that the closure could lead to flight delays and cancellations. The effect on schedules will depend in part on airline operations and weather, particularly wind direction.

“Safety is the top priority at Chicago’s airports,” Aviation Commissioner Michael McMurray said in a statement. He said the department is working with the Federal Aviation Administration and airlines to limit disruptions and restore normal operations safely.

Travelers should check their flight status and contact their airline before leaving for the airport. Passengers affected by schedule changes should work with their carrier on rebooking or other arrangements.
