Lemont man charged after 76 dogs removed from home during firearms-order search
Authorities say 76 dogs were living in unsafe conditions inside a Lemont home, garage and yard before a multi-agency rescue this week. The 58-year-old homeowner was arrested on animal cruelty and felony weapons charges; three firearms were recovered during the search.
Seventy-six dogs were removed this week from a Lemont property where authorities say they were living in unsafe conditions, and the 58-year-old homeowner was arrested on animal cruelty and felony weapons charges.
The dogs were found at a home in the 800 block of McCarthy Road, including inside the house and garage, according to authorities. Lemont police, Cook County Animal Control, the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Animal Cruelty Unit and other animal-control departments took part in the operation.
Officers were executing a search warrant connected to a Firearms Restraining Order when they removed the animals. Authorities also recovered three firearms.
Photos shared by local rescue Ruby Whiskers showed dirt on floors and walls, debris scattered through the home and plastic bins that appeared to have been used as makeshift dog beds. Kim Arius, who runs Ruby Whiskers, said the smell inside caused her eyes and throat to burn.
Arius said she had expected to find 20 or 30 dogs, but they were spread throughout the property, including in the garage, yard and bushes. Ruby Whiskers took in three dogs, one of which may be pregnant.
Several area rescues are helping care for the animals. Many Paws Global Rescue said the dogs will need medical evaluations, veterinary treatment and rehabilitation, and that the rescue process will take time and substantial resources. The animals are expected to be released to rescues in groups as they are identified.
Authorities identified the homeowner as Andrew Malak. The charges include several counts of animal cruelty and felony weapons offenses. The available information does not specify the individual charges or provide further details about the dogs’ condition.
