A Chicago family is seeking answers after Rosa Hernandez Rivera, a mother of five, was shot in the head while riding in a car near West 47th Street and South Western Avenue on Thursday morning.

Hernandez Rivera was headed to a grocery store with her boyfriend when a gray sedan pulled alongside their vehicle and shots were fired, her family said. The shooting is being described as an apparent road-rage incident, but authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive.

Relatives gathered outside Mount Sinai Hospital on Friday, where Hernandez Rivera was receiving care. Her niece, Jennifer Barrea, said the family was praying for her recovery and wanted justice.

“Why get mad over parking, driving,” Barrea said. “The anger goes away. There’s no need to pull out a gun and shoot someone.” She added that Hernandez Rivera’s five children need their mother and that she needs her aunt in her life.

Chicago police said the investigation was ongoing and had released no new information as of Friday afternoon. An online fundraiser has been created to help support Hernandez Rivera’s recovery and her children.
