Forklift spill closes lanes on southbound Kennedy near Hubbard Street
A tow truck carrying a forklift crashed on I-90 southbound shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, sending the equipment into a bridge and spilling battery acid. No injuries were reported, but multiple lanes were shut for cleanup amid differing descriptions of the hazard response.
A crash involving a tow truck and a forklift shut multiple lanes of the Kennedy Expressway southbound Wednesday morning after battery acid spilled onto the roadway near Hubbard Street, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in Hubbard’s Cave, where the forklift being hauled by the truck toppled into a bridge. Illinois State Police said no injuries were reported and lanes were closed while crews cleaned up the spill.
The agencies described the hazard differently: State Police said the incident was not a hazardous-materials emergency, while the Chicago Fire Department and the city classified it as a Level 1 hazmat situation. Officials had not provided an estimate for when cleanup would be finished or the closures lifted.
