Chicago reaches 87 degrees on Oct. 12, topping daily record set in 2008
A high of 87 degrees at O’Hare International Airport broke Chicago’s Oct. 12 record of 85, sending holiday crowds to city beaches. Warm weather was expected to continue through Tuesday before colder nights arrive later in the week.
Chicago set a new daily high-temperature record Monday, Oct. 12, when temperatures at O’Hare International Airport reached 87 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. That topped the previous Oct. 12 record of 85 degrees, set in 2008. The high could rise further, forecasters said.
The unseasonable warmth drew people to the lakefront on the Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day holiday. At 31st Street Beach, 8-year-old Violeta Gonzalez tossed a frisbee after her mother, Victoria Castillo, decided the family should get outside.
“It’s really warm in October,” Gonzalez said. “I’m confused, but I like it.”
Chicago police detective Danyelle Cochran spent the day boating with coworkers before they returned to duty Tuesday. “I think this is it, so we have to enjoy,” she said of the warm weather.
The warmth was forecast to linger through Tuesday, with overnight lows potentially falling into the upper 30s by the end of the week.
