Mecklenburg commissioners hear limits on response to CMS spending allegations
Mecklenburg County commissioners have limited authority to intervene as multiple investigations examine allegations of financial misconduct involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, County Manager Mike Bryant said Tuesday, Oct. 6. Bryant told the Board of County Commissioners that his office is reviewing what options may be available. The county allocated more than $730 million to CMS in its most recent budget, but the manager said the ongoing investigations constrain the county’s response. “The alleged misuse of local funds for questionable CMS transactions is concerning,” Bryant told commissioners. The allegations include claims that questioned spending involved county money. In a Sept. 22 email to Bryant, former CMS Superintendent Crystal Hill said mismanaged funds involved county dollars, according to information discussed at the meeting. Three separate investigations are underway. Commissioners also considered a motion to review county funds provided to CMS, but the motion did not pass. The allegations have not been established as fact. Bryant’s comments underscored the county’s concern about whether local dollars were involved while investigations proceed.
