Union County sheriff’s office investigates swastika painted on school board candidate’s sign
The Union County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a swastika was painted on a campaign sign for school board candidate Alexis Stadler near Waxhaw last week. Deputies responded Oct. 1 to the intersection of Old Waxhaw Monroe Road and Providence Road, where they found a black swastika painted on the sign, the sheriff’s office said. Stadler is running for an at-large seat on the Union County Board of Education. Stadler said in a Facebook post the next day that she learned about the defacement through a text message. She noted that her husband is Jewish and that their children are being raised with both Catholic and Jewish traditions. She also said other Democratic candidates’ signs were in the area, but hers was the only one marked. Stadler described the incident as a “targeted and deliberate attack” and said it was the third time in two weeks she had to file a report. The sheriff’s office said Tuesday, Oct. 6, that investigators were working to identify the person responsible. A spokesperson said residents may express differing political views, but that does not justify criminal conduct or property damage. The office described incidents of this kind as uncommon in Union County and said it had not seen an increase in similar cases. Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s office at 704-283-3789.
